Well, we had a good run, but its pretty clear that the next big lurch down is here. Luckily, we are surrounded by the cast offs and rubbish of our former greatness and prosperity. As people cling to lifestyles that are fading away, clawing and fighting like crabs struggling to escape a bucket, what strange and interesting humus might be found at the bottom, amidst the filth and squalor? Some of us brave folks are finding out. I can stride into a Goodwill and stride right back out in the clothes of some dead man, with a handful of yellowing books to boot. When the going gets tough, the tough get funky.

I'm making light of the turmoil engulfing much of my country right now because sometimes you can choose to laugh or cry, and I am perverse enough to laugh even when I can feel my eyes welling up a bit. I recognize that I am fundamentally screwed in a real survival situation; I am clumsy and unskilled and the worst kind of stupid (the type of fool who's spent his whole life thinking he was smarter than everyone else in fact!). I spent years of my life painting crappy pictures and smoking crappy weed and reading trash novels and now that the end of civilization as we know it appears to be nigh, I'm essentially the grasshopper in the old tale who wasn't like the smart, laborious ant who had his shit together. I think that's how the story went; I was probably high when I read it.

I'm not really a good enough writer to tie those two disparate paragraphs together, but I swore an oath that I would get bloggin' this year and I'm sticking to it. I never swore that my writing had to be good, or that I had to acquire an audience.
